As someone who teaches macros all day every day, it sounds crazy to tell you that knowing your perfect macros at the beginning can actually be harmful to you in the long run… So let’s just dive into it! One thing I get asked very frequently in my DMs are questions along the lines of: What macros do I need to lose weight? Why are these macros someone gave me not working for me? Do macros just NOT work for me?!

And maybe you’ve found yourself asking or thinking these same questions. You’ve dipped your toes in the water of DIY macro tracking, but something isn’t working. Maybe you’ve blown up your favorite coaches’ DMs, tried every online macro tracking calculator in existence. Or even taken it a step further and gotten a one-time macro consultation with a legitimate coach. You’ve gotten your “magic” numbers, whether for free or paid, and they might have even worked for a time. But then they STOPPED. And you’re frustrated and feeling like macro tracking isn’t worth all the hype because it doesn’t work for you… But there are two major problems with this approach of simply relying on the “perfect numbers”. 

When I get asked in my DMs about macros from people, I honestly have no idea because it’s completely out of context. I need your entire history. What your dieting experience has been, how long you’ve been trying to lose weight, what kinds of emotional stressors could be impacting you… the list of things goes ON.

There is so much that goes into macro tracking, and it’s all personalized to you. So the first issue with getting cookie cutter macro numbers is that they often lack context to be truly beneficial. And even if it is a solid macro ratio for you specifically, perfect numbers don’t take into account every day life. Or the changes your body will need as time goes on (for example, sometimes the best thing for you to lose weight is to actually INCREASE calories!

I’m going to be honest with you, macros are STUPID EASY… once you know how to actually apply them. When you’re just spitballing your macros, even ones a professional gave you, the macros don’t help you if you don’t also learn application. Because what happens when life gets in the way? Let’s say you’re on a roll tracking your macros. Then unexpected guests come in from out of town, or a birthday party comes up, or you forgot to thaw the chicken last night and now you don’t know what to make for dinner?

Or what if you went off the rails a little bit and over ate yesterday. Now you’re wondering, what the hell you need to do to get back on track? Do you eat less the next day? Cut carbs? You get the picture. When all you have are your “perfect” macros, it can do more harm than help if you don’t know how to roll with the punches of life.

Macro tracking, when used strategically and with balance, is an UNPARALLELED way to lose weight. It’s one of the easiest, most effective ways to lose and keep weight off. It takes time getting in a rhythm with how to apply them. That’s why working with a coach to help you approach macros in a way that’s specific to you and your lifestyle is WAY more impactful in your weight loss journey than just aiming to hit a ratio of macros you found online.

Without application, it’s like going to a dentist that’s never worked on a patient before. Would you want to go to one who has read all the books, learned what number every tooth is, but never did a single clinical? Absolutely NOT. And it’s the same thing with macro tracking. Having the numbers is just turning on the ignition. You need to know how to navigate traffic in order to effectively use macro tracking. Life gets messy. No one starts a diet and doesn’t EVER have social obligations, holidays, a VACATION, or leaves their lunch at home. The only way perfect macros work without learning application is in a perfect life, and that doesn’t exist.

Yes, there will be times when you’re just cruising along and crushing your macros, but most of the time life is messy. So that’s why learning HOW to effectively use macro tracking in the midst of life’s craziness is so important.
