Have you ever felt like you’re working SO hard to lose weight and yet nothing is happening? You’re exercising religiously, you’ve cut as many calories as you can, and yet not ONE freaking pound comes off?! Literally, what gives? Meanwhile, your coworker recently started walking a little more and she cut back on wine during the week just to “get in better shape”, and suddenly she’s losing weight faster than you can say your favorite curse word?
I know that it feels like it makes no sense, and it’s annoying AF. You’re working SO hard and you’re feeling so defeated that you’re not seeing any progress. But there IS a reason for it and in this blog I’m talking all about it! We will be diving into why getting in shape and losing weight aren’t necessarily the same thing for many people, AND why your current exercise program isn’t working for you anymore.
If you’d prefer to read this… you’re in the right place! 😉

There are generally two main categories of people when it comes to losing weight:
- Those starting the process of losing weight and getting in shape
- Those already in shape but who still want to lose weight!
Full Disclosure: This blog is Primarily for Group Number 2!
You’re already active, you’ve seen some success but you’ve hit a plateau when it comes to your weight loss. If you are someone who is more camped out in group number 1 and you’re just starting out check out this blog!
But let’s get back to the main point of this blog: why you’re struggling to lose weight even though you’re already in shape! Trust me, I get it. It’s super frustrating when you’ve been working so hard and then you see someone who’s just starting out shredding pounds like craaaaazy. But the reason that people who just start being a little more active see huge changes is because it’s a brand new shock to the system.
Their body’s status quo has so far consisted of very little exercise, so now that they’ve started making changes their body is responding to this new stimulus by losing weight (this is oversimplifying the process, but you get the idea!)
You’re Probably Thinking…

“Well what the hell gives?! I’m working so hard and they’ve only made minor adjustments.” The reason? Your body is used to what you’re doing. And what you’ve been doing probably looks something like working out 4-6 days a week, eating a fairly low calorie diet, and not seeing progress in your weight loss. You have a really healthy lifestyle and that’s awesome, but your body has become used to this status quo and it’s no longer conducive to losing weight.
The thing is, your body is always trying to look for trends to match energy expenditure with what you’re putting in and putting out. Your body has become so used to you exercising like a total beast and eating like a bird that this has become your new maintenance level. You’ve turned your body into a Tesla and it is an energy preserving MACHINE. So how do you get out of this vicious cycle? You need to alter what you’re doing so you can change the response your body gives you the next time you enter a fat loss phase.
Recovery Diet for Losing Weight

And this is when a reverse or recovery diet comes into play. Oftentimes this looks like starting to decrease exercise and increase calories (I know, for those of you who love working out and it’s basically your whole personality – this sounds TERRIBLE! I was once there too). But trust me on this… a recovery diet allows you to “reset” your body so you can actually lose the weight you’re working so hard to lose.
A recovery diet teaches your body a new status quo so that, when your body is ready, you can start another fat loss phase and actually start shedding those last pounds.
So if this sounds like you, it’s time to cool your jets for a little bit. Yes, you are a super healthy person and that’s great! BUT – it’s time to let your body reset to a different kind of healthy lifestyle… One where you don’t have to be the ultimate exercise guru, but where you can actually allow yourself to implement a weight loss phase that will get you where you want to be.
